Owned by Tyler & Georgia Foerster, Somerset Co. is a small family ranch South of Bastrop. Tyler has been working cows and baling hay for over 21 years. He now farms over 2000 acres of hay land and cow pasture in Bastrop and Fayette county.
Since starting a family we’ve seen the importance of eating truly nourishing food. Producing nutrient dense beef starts with the soil. Using regenerative farming techniques, not only do we see our pastures improve but also the ripple effect of an increase in biodiversity, healthy and happy cattle, a higher nutrient content in the meat, and more carbon returning to the land.
Happy cattle are healthy cattle, so our calves are raised with their mothers out in the pasture. Then they are weaned and rotationally grazed in luscious pastures until it’s time for them to be butchered. The calves will graze oats, wheat, clover, rye, coastal bermudagrass plus native grasses that have returned from the seed bank. A sign of success, the land is returning to its natural state.
Our farming methods are always evolving, as we learn and strive to make our beef the best it can be.
This year promises to be an exciting one. We’ve weaned our first foals, and are impatiently waiting for the next foals to be born this spring.
Two Hereford bulls joined us in December 2023, with their superior grass genetics what a fantastic cross we should see with one of our current herds of Brangus cattle.
Most excitingly we will be making some big steps in our regenerative ranching practices with the addition of sheep and chickens.
However, we cannot get carried away with all the fun things; there’s still fences to fix and hay to feed.
The goal is to improve soil health, increase food and nutrition, store more carbon and enhance biodiversity. One outcome of regenerative agriculture is the potential for higher nutrient content of crops thereby feeding the population more nutrient-rich foods, which leads to our society's improved nutrition.
